Have you ever been sick and needed to take medicine in pill form? Have you ever wondered why pills vary in their appearance and coatings? Surprisingly, much design goes into developing pill tablet coatings. Varying the material or thickness of a coating can dramatically affect a medication’s effect on the body. Engineers play a key role in the process of developing and testing chemicals for coatings. In this workshop, students will become bioengineers and design their own protective coating for a pill. Students will test their designs to see if their coatings can withstand the harsh environments that pills come in contact with in the body. Young Women In Bio RTP is hosting this workshop for elementary and middle school girls as part of the 2023 TechnoQuest Event hosted by the Girl Scouts North Carolina Coastal Pines organization.
